Fortune favors the brave. This cannot be truer than in the case of J K Rowling (pronounced rolling) or Joanne Kathleen Rowling, who catapulted into fame due to her Harry Potter series. She is an admirable lady who has turned her life lessons into books which everyone could relate to. There was a point in her life when she was on State Welfare, but she bounced back to write the Harry Potter series, which became a sensation overnight, giving rise to “Pottermania”. Her difficult childhood and her loneliness were expressed in the childhood of Potter, as well as her sadness in losing her mother to Multiple Sclerosis, was reflected in the loss of Harry’s mother. The sadness she felt at her mother’s passing away was an underlying thread in all the Potter books.

The success of the films as well as the books was maybe due to the fact that she tried to instill values through her characters in her books. The world appreciated that fact and showered her with acclaim and adoration.

She enthralled us with the Harry Potter series for a period of ten years. A generation of young people grew up with Potter. But, truth to tell, adults, as well as children were, and still are, obsessed with the series.  The Harry Potter series came at a time reading was down among children due to television and video games. Starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, published in 1997, and ending with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the success of the books and the film rights made her a millionaire with a fortune of £560 million (approx). The Harry Potter films became the highest grossing film series in history.

In 2009 Rowling was made a Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and in 2010, she was the O.B.E. (Officer) for Services to Children’s literature, among the many awards she has received till date.

Under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, she has written “The Cuckoo’s Calling”, “The Silkworm”, “Career of Evil”. “The Casual Vacancy” is another book for adults by Rowling.

She is also known for her charitable work and she has donated and raised millions of pounds for charity.
