It’s happened two years in a row – an all-white Oscars. Not a single actor of color was nominated for the Best Actor awards. Actor Jada Pinkett Smith in a powerful video posted on Facebook said “Begging for acknowledgment or even asking diminishes dignity and diminishes power and we are a dignified people and we are powerful, and let’s not forget it,…” .“So let’s let the Academy do them with all grace and love and let’s do us differently.”
She announced on Monday that she would be boycotting the Oscars. Husband Will Smith was in the running to be nominated for his film Concussion, and Michael Jordan and Idris Alba were expected to be nominated for their films Creed and Beasts of No Nation, respectively. Director Spike Lee too announced his decision to boycott the Oscar Awards, following her statement. The President of the Academy Cheryl Boone issued a statement saying that she is “heartbroken” at the “lack of inclusion”.

It’s certainly a shame and shows up The Academy’s hypocrisy in getting Chris Rock to host the awards but leaving out worthy actors in the nominations. Many other actors and producers like Spike Lee, Will Packer and Michael Shur took to twitter to express their disappointment and anger. So we should ask the question which is on everyone’s minds: why? Is it because if a non-white actor been nominated, he would have walked away with the award – what was the reason for such a lily-white Oscar, as director Spike Lee called it. Food for thought and we hope in 2017, it will be a different story.Hergossip
